MARCH 20226MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY INSIGHTSTechnology has contributed to the development of a global market that consists of consumers around the world who are committed to sustainability. As a result, manufacturers have sought alternatives to petroleum-based products and have identified biodegradable and environmentally-friendly options. These are just some of the changes occurring. In 2022, the global demand for various types of packaging products will either remain stable or increase. This includes production in Japan, China, European countries, and the United States. In fact, one of the strengths of the pulp and paper industry is the fact that the demand for packaging products is always expanding. This is spurred by the boost in online shopping and the explosion of e-commerce entrepreneurial endeavors in recent years. The structure of the industry landscape is changing. The changes are not dramatic individually, but the accumulation of changes over the long term has now reached a point where they are making a difference.Consolidation has been a major factor in many segments of the industry. The big have become bigger in their chosen areas of focus. At the aggregate level, the world's largest paper and forest-products companies have not grown much, if at all, and several of them have reduced in size. What they have done is focus their efforts on fewer segments. The proliferation of digital technology at both home and work has dramatically decreased overall demand for "graphic papers." This category includes paper products like regular printer paper, newsprint, and the glossy paper used for magazines and brochures. We are moving away from a "paper world" for day-to-day communication, and this clear trend may lead casual observers to assume the pulp-and-paper industry is in decline. In our experience, pulp and paper industry applications are typically best served by carefully engineering materials and components to reflect specific operating challenges. Caustic chemicals, large quantities of water, abrasive media, vibration, and high-heat are all daily working realities for pulp and paper firms, and any of these issues can degrade components made from the wrong materials.Let us know your thoughts. The Next Frontier of the Pulp and Paper IndustryEDITORIALCopyright © 2022 ValleyMedia, Inc.
