9MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY INSIGHTSMAY 2024Despite the disadvantages, CNC technology will only get better. CNC machines are becoming more affordable and more compact in size. Smaller size allows integration of cobots. This will improve the efficiency of machine tending applications and ramp up the productivity of the operation. In addition, it will introduce greater level of safety by allowing operators to avoid repetitive movements of loading and unloading the machine. The future of CNC technology looks promising, with several trends shaping its evolution in the coming years. Few notable trends are increased automation, integration with AI and machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), enhanced customization, greater emphasis on sustainability.Increased automation: CNC machines will become increasingly automated, reducing the need for human intervention and increasing efficiency.Integration with AI and machine learning: CNC machines will become more intelligent, incorporating AI and machine learning algorithms to optimize performance and decision-making.The Internet of Things (IoT): CNC machines will be connected to the Internet of Things (IoT), allowing for real-time monitoring and control of the manufacturing process.Enhanced customization: CNC machines will become more flexible and customizable, allowing for the production of unique and personalized products.Greater emphasis on sustainability: CNC machines will become more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, reducing their impact on the environment.Choosing the right CNC machine is crucial for success of machining operation. It is important to carefully consider the intended purpose, workpiece size, production volume, budget, technical expertise, brand reputation, and after-sales support to ensure that you select the best machine for your needs. In my opinion, consideration of the availability of after sales support such as training, maintenance, and repair services should be the most important factor in choosing a CNC machine/supplier in order to ensure the long-term success of the CNC machine. Additionally, I would also recommend evaluation of 3d printing options prior to purchasing a CNC machine (mainly low temperature profile plastics). CNC is a subtractive manufacturing process that generates unnecessary waste. But at present, it is a lot more efficient, cost effective and agile than most of available additive manufacturing technologies/processes. CNC machines can be programmed to perform a wide variety of tasks, from cutting and drilling to engraving and milling, making them ideal for complex manufacturing processes
