A Reno, Nevada-based company, AIMS Power is carving a niche in the off-grid and renewable energy sector by offering trusted sources of power to many of the world’s largest companies and government organizations. The company has established itself as a one-stop-shop with offerings that include its signature DC to AC inverters, solar panels, deep-cycle batteries, solar charge controllers, controllers, cables, fuse kits, and more.

“At AIMS Power, we undertake a customer-based approach and focus on providing the products that the customers really need for their off grid and renewable energy needs,” states Bruce de Jong, President and Founder at AIMS Power. Started in 2001 as a supplier of portable power solutions for work trucks and recreational vehicles (RVs) and as a back-up power source for small electrical devices, AIMS Power, today has grown into developing a range of innovative products for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). “We have the largest variety of inverters for our customers so that they don’t have to settle for a product that will work, rather they can get the exact product they need,” says Bruce. The company’s low frequency and pure sine inverter chargers come in 12-, 24-, 48-, and 384-volts variant with automatic power transfer bypass that stands on par with the industrial-grade requirements of enterprises. With an ability to produce cleaner power, the pure sine inverter chargers are all-in-one devices that convert DC power to AC power. Simultaneously, they charge a back-up battery bank for use when AC power is disconnected or electricity from the local utility is lost, making them an excellent choice for emergency preparedness as well as the complete off-grid living.

With continued innovations, AIMS Power has built inverter chargers with a much larger capacity than other competitors in a consumer-friendly cost point. Bruce informs, “While our competitors build a 3000-watt unit and then stack three or four of them to get to the 12,000-watt, we have an off the shelf 12,000-watt inverter charger, which comes in the same cost as two of the 3000-watt units.” Due to a single unit inverter charger, these products’ installation also becomes less chaotic with a minimum amount of connecting cables and loose connections. In addition to inverter chargers, AIMS Power also offers a range of modified sine inverters, pure sine inverters, rack mount inverters, international inverters, which comes in different versions and configurations from 12 volts up to 384 volts. More importantly, as the platform for inverters is the same, the company also offers customized inverters with different input and output voltages and frequencies based on enterprises’ requirements. “We keep listening to our customers and are more than willing to design and develop customized products that fit their bill,” says Bruce. Further, AIMS Power also provides accessories for the backup power system, which includes battery temperature sensors that monitor batteries and remote on/off switches that allow quick, easy control of the power inverters.

Moving towards Grid Independence

Due to sweeping environmental, social, and business trends, including climate change and global carbon regulation, organizations worldwide are pushing for grid independence using renewable energy sources. According to the “Renewable 2019” report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), renewable energy capacity is set to expand 50 per cent between 2019 and 2024, led by solar energy. To that end, AIMS Power extended its product line to solar products, including solar panels, solar charge controllers, racks, combiner products, and others to satiate its clients’ demand for renewable energy needs. “Over the years, we have branched out into other products that customers have requested to work with the inverters,” informs Bruce. The company offers a wide range of 60-watt to 275-watt solar panels in rigid and foldable variants for several applications. These solar panels are ideal for RV manufacturers that require 2000 to 2500-watts and enterprise buildings that require more than 30000-watts, allowing them to live off the grid completely. They can reduce the utility bills and act as back-up power in case of emergencies.

Several private and public institutions, including NASA, the Department of Defense (DoD), Princeton University, and others, depend on AIMS Power for their back-up power needs. The company has clients in Florida, Virgin Island, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Bruce shares a customer success story of an RV manufacturer, nu Camp, that build smaller RVs and trailers. The manufacturers needed power inverters to electrical power appliances like microwaves, computers, and others in the RVs and trailers. AIMS Power offers them a custom kit that can be mounted seamlessly, saving them time on the production line. “We built an inverter with automatic transfer that we pre-wired the cabling to the inverter and provided the fuse, and ship it as a single piece kit, so that when they receive it, all they have to do is mount it, connect it and they’re done,” says Bruce.

Pushing the Boundaries of Innovation

AIMS Power gives utmost emphasis on innovating their products to suit the industry demands. The company’s philosophy is to push for sustainable living and has its office building in Reno, Nevada, entirely off-grid. This year the company is scheduled to introduce hybrid inverters that take solar power and load share with the city power to reduce clients’ energy bill. Also, these inverters will allow net metering for energy credits. The company is also working on a control unit that will put all of the company’s products’ data into a single box, enabling the users to control the products remotely via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Besides, with immense success in North and Central America, AIMS Power is aiming for geographical expansions with facilities in the East Coast and South East. “We are committed towards innovation in the design and development of off-grid and renewable energy for cleaner energy,” concludes Bruce.
