Matt Seeboth, PresidentAmerican Carbon Company (ACC) places this comprehensive understanding at the heart of its operations.
ACC actively engages with its customers to fully grasp where and how the materials will be used to gain insights into their distinct challenges and requirements. Matt Seeboth, president of American Carbon Company, explains, “Sometimes the simplest solutions are the most overlooked. A brief conversation with a customer reveals how they use our products. Through these insights, we can provide often overlooked value-add services such as near-net-sized raw materials, increasing product efficiency and retaining scrap for recycling, fostering a sustainable and cost-effective partnership.”
ACC primarily engages with clients through two distinct tracks. The first and most common track involves partnering on novel concept projects. Here, ACC collaborates with clients to identify the material that best meets their needs. This is achieved through a decision matrix that balances material characteristics against cost, availability and efficacy in the intended application.
The second aspect involves engaging with customers to source additional vendors for existing applications. These interactions often uncover surprising opportunities to enhance customer value. As technology and processes evolve, ACC has noticed that many buyers fall into the habit of letting existing vendor constraints, such as minimum order quantities and standard product dimensions, dictate their sourcing processes. This approach can lead to missed opportunities. Moreover, management frequently views procurement departments merely as cost centers, failing to allocate sufficient resources and leaving buyers overworked. Consequently, buyers often adopt the mindset, “This is how we’ve always done it, and it works, so why change?” However, by asking a few targeted questions, ACC gains valuable insights into clients’ processes, enabling them to suggest minor adjustments in purchasing decisions that significantly increase value.
When asked about ordering lengthy sections only to cut them down, the customer explained this was their previous supplier’s recommendation. The supplier preferred this method to minimize cutting on their production floor, boosting throughput and productivity. However, it led to several downstream issues—more difficult shipping, higher chances of damage, increased packaging costs and more complex handling and storage, especially in tight manufacturing spaces. ACC proposed a simple yet effective solution for handling the cutting, delivering the extrusions in 12-inch lengths directly to them. This adjustment streamlined the customer’s process by eliminating an unnecessary step and mitigated the risks of shipping damage, reduced packaging costs and eased storage challenges. By solving multiple inefficiencies, the customer hadn’t fully recognized, ACC showcased the positive impact a thoughtful material supplier can have on optimizing a client’s operations.
The company’s problem-solving mindset extends to addressing the broader challenges faced by procurement teams sourcing new suppliers, finding the right products and staying updated with real-time production changes. By employing advanced analytics, ACC monitors material usage patterns and market trends to make informed decisions for its clients. Strategic stock placement allows clients to swiftly adapt to changes in production volumes or material specifications without excessive inventory or lead times.![]()

This proactive approach is why customers turn to ACC for solutions like extruded magnesium and specialty graphite. Magnesium alloys, known for their low density, high stiffness and shock absorption, are ideal for reducing weight while maintaining structural integrity. ACC’s world-class extrusion presses produce large, defect-free pieces, reducing machining time and enhancing customer value. Its magnesium portfolio is complimented by specialty graphite designed for high-performance applications requiring superior thermal and electrical conductivity.
ACC takes care of every minute detail—from choosing the best raw materials to strict quality checks; it ensures clients get exactly what they need without compromising. This focus makes ACC the go-to partner for businesses to succeed in the advanced materials sector.
