DEI in Workplace

Ebony Travis Tichenor

Defining and Prioritizing DEI

This article is based on an interview with Ebony Travis Tichenor, director of global well-being & HR employee policies at Boston Scientific.

As a professional with over 26+ years of experience in the medical device industry holding a variety of roles, I see diversity, equity, & inclusion (DEI) as central to my professional and personal identity and mission, blending personal experiences with professional expertise to promote accountability and awareness around these critical issues. I would like to believe that I embody the principle that DEI is not just a set of policies but a lived experience and a commitment to making the workplace and the world more inclusive and equitable. Through my work, I emphasize the importance of joy, authenticity, purpose and motivation as keys to not balance but harmony and satisfaction in both life and work, suggesting that DEI should be integrated into every aspect of organizational culture to foster an environment where every individual can thrive inside and outside of work.

Initiatives to Enhance Employee Recruitment and Retention

I utilize my speaking engagements across various platforms, including women's groups, DEI forums and leadership conferences, as powerful tools to drive initiatives focused on enhancing workplace diversity, equity, inclusion, well-being and employee policies. These platforms have enabled me to share my personal insights, strategies and best practices with a broader audience, amplifying impact on employee recruitment, retention, development, mentorship opportunities, well-being initiatives and so much more.

‘I believe influential voices can lead change and inspire action across industries, contributing to developing more inclusive, equitable and dynamic workplaces.’

By leveraging my speaking opportunities through so many platforms across the world, I not only share my expertise and experiences but also create a ripple effect that encourages others to share their stories and experiences. I like to believe I have the ability to genuinely connect with diverse audiences and articulate the value of diversity, equity, inclusion, well-being and employee policies in tangible terms that have created opportunities for many to do the same. Live their passion and share their insights and learnings.

My work, particularly with women's groups and other diversity-focused platforms, showcases the importance of creating spaces where employees feel seen, heard and valued. This approach enhances opportunities for people like me and me and fosters a sense of belonging and engagement for all. I believe influential voices can lead change and inspire action across industries, contributing to developing more inclusive, equitable and dynamic workplaces.

Challenges That Current Services Are Unable to Solve

Businesses today face multifaceted challenges that outstrip the capacities of existing services, notably in adapting to rapid technological advancements, enhancing cybersecurity, recruiting and retaining skilled talent, diverse talent and optimizing remote work dynamics. Additionally, pressures to operate sustainably, provide personalized customer and employee experiences and navigate a complex regulatory landscape highlight the gap between current service offerings and the evolving needs of modern businesses. These challenges necessitate a proactive approach, urging businesses to seek innovative, flexible solutions that can address these gaps effectively. By partnering with forward-thinking service providers and embracing next-generation technologies, businesses can navigate these challenges, ensuring resilience, competitiveness and sustainability in a rapidly changing global marketplace.

Advice for Professionals and Organizations Looking to Strengthen Their Commitment to DEI

My approach to enhancing DEI and well-being in every setting I come across emphasizes the power of authenticity, proactive leadership and a commitment to individual and collective well-being.
