Makera is reimagining CNC machining for a new generation of creators. The idea took root nearly a decade ago when the founders were immersed in the world of drones, robotics and electronics. They were makers themselves, constantly experimenting with their ideas. But again and again, they hit the same wall. They needed precise, custom parts, and the available tools didn’t cut it.

Industrial CNC machines were too expensive and overkill for small-scale projects. While affordable, desktop alternatives were slow, cumbersome, and limited in capability.

“We wanted a machine that’s fast, precise and easy to use,” says Josh Zhang, CEO and co-founder. “We couldn’t find one, so we built one.”

What was conceptualized as a tool quickly evolved into a full-blown vision; to remove the barriers around CNC technology and give more people the power to make high-quality products. They set out to combine the accessibility and size of desktop machines with the power and reliability of industrial systems, eliminating clunky software, manual tool changes, and steep learning curves.

That vision took shape in 2021 with the launch of the Carvera, a fully automated, next-gen CNC machine designed to remove the complexity and cost barriers to precision manufacturing.

The Carvera features automatic tool-changing, enabling seamless transitions between tasks for faster production and a true autonomous experience.

It also includes wireless auto-probing and auto-leveling, features rarely seen in desktop CNCs. While most machines are limited to conductive materials, the Carvera’s system works reliably across a range of surfaces, including PCBs, plastics, woods, and soft metals. The probe maps the surface and adjusts toolpaths in real-time, ensuring consistent cut depths and clean finishes, even on uneven or warped stock. This level of precision and automation further reduces manual intervention, making the Carvera a powerful tool for rapid prototyping and complex hobbyist projects. Combined with self-developed CAM software, the Carvera eliminates the need for expensive and complex industrial programs, making professional-grade machining accessible to makers of all levels.

In its debut year, the Carvera raised $1.7 million on Kickstarter and sold 500 units, a clear sign that Makera’s approach resonated with engineers, product designers and educators. The response was overwhelming, proving there was a massive demand for a powerful, intuitive and user-friendly CNC solution.

Priced around $5,000, the Carvera has proven invaluable for businesses, educational institutions, and professionals who rely on precision machining for rapid prototyping and small-scale production. Businesses use it to manufacture aluminum parts, refine product enclosures, and prototype PCBs. Research labs and classrooms integrate it into hands-on learning programs.

A compelling example is a guitar enthusiast who initially purchased a Carvera to modify and optimize his instruments. With its precision machining capabilities, he developed a specialized fretwork tool to enhance the accuracy of guitar repairs and modifications. Demand for the tool grew rapidly as word spread among musicians and fellow luthiers. What started as a personal project soon evolved into a full-fledged business, prompting him to scale up production with multiple Carvera machines. Today, his company supplies high-precision tools to guitar makers and repair professionals worldwide, demonstrating how accessible CNC machining can transform a hobby into a thriving enterprise.

Makera’s technology is also reshaping product development in professional settings. An organization specializing in video and audio transmission systems relies on the Carvera to refine aluminum enclosures and prototype PCBs. Traditionally, adjusting metal casings required outsourcing to machine shops, leading to long lead times and high costs. With a Carvera in-house, an organization can rapidly iterate designs, modify enclosures on demand and create functional PCB prototypes.

High-End Precision, Now on Every Workbench

Makera saw an opportunity to build on this success by making high-end CNC machining even more accessible in terms of cost, usability and versatility. The Carvera Air followed in 2024. The lighter, more accessible version brought the same focus on automation and user-friendliness to a broader community of makers and professionals.

While more compact and affordable, the Carvera Air still packs in key features like automatic leveling, automatic probing, and smart software integration, making it ideal for rapid prototyping, education, and small-scale production. The demand was even greater this time. Two thousand units of Carvera Air were sold worldwide, generating $3.5 million in revenue and solidifying Makera’s reputation as a game-changer in the CNC space.

The Carvera Air is favored by makers, DIY enthusiasts, and hobbyists who use it to build everything from robotics and RC vehicles to custom crafts and home decor. Beyond expanding its hardware lineup, Makera is equally focused on refining the user experience. It continues to develop an ecosystem of materials, milling bits and accessories to enhance usability, such as a dedicated dust collection system and work-holding solutions.

“We’re constantly iterating and improving our machines, as well as the accessories, software and overall user experience,” says Zhang. Innovation remains a top priority on the software side. Plans include the release of an even more affordable model and significant upgrades to the user interface. Looking ahead, Makera is developing AI-powered CAM software that will make it even easier to generate 3D models and toolpaths, streamlining the machining process for users at every skill level.

Just as the 3D printing world thrives on vibrant communities where users share models and ideas, Makera is building a similar, open-access platform around CNC machining. This open-access community will allow users to showcase projects, exchange tips and draw inspiration, whether they use Makera machines or others, fostering creativity across the entire CNC space. Makera is sparking a new wave of hands-on innovation where precision meets possibility.
